Crypto Market Faces Turbulence Amid Presidential Debate and Economic Signals
In June 2024, the aggregate market cap of the 14 U.S.-listed bitcoin mining stocks tracked by JPMorgan surged to a record high of $22.8 billion. This increase was driven by positive investor reactions to Core Scientific's deal with AI firm CoreWeave, which led to mining stocks outperforming Bitcoin, despite a 3% decline in Bitcoin's value in the first half of June. Core Scientific saw a 117% gain, making it the top performer, while Argo Blockchain was the worst, dropping 7%. Additionally, U.S.-listed miners have increased their share of the global network hashrate for the second consecutive month, now accounting for approximately 23.8% of the total, as inefficient private operators scaled back following the April reward halving.
Mt. Gox, the defunct bitcoin exchange, announced it will begin repaying assets stolen in the 2014 hack starting in the first week of July 2024. This move, after years of delays, could add selling pressure to both Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash markets as early investors receive assets that have significantly appreciated in value since their pre-2013 entries. The exchange once handled over 70% of all Bitcoin transactions and lost approximately 740,000 bitcoins in the hack. In May, Mt. Gox moved over 140,000 BTC, worth around $9 billion, marking the first on-chain wallet movements in five years.
Bitcoin’s recovery stalled as it struggled to maintain momentum above $61,000 amid a strengthening dollar, with the dollar index (DXY) reaching its highest since May. This halt in recovery coincides with investor caution ahead of key U.S. economic data releases. Ether and the broader crypto market faced lackluster trading, with expectations of lower demand for U.S.-based spot Ether ETFs compared to Bitcoin ETFs. Bitcoin miner Marathon Digital has diversified its revenue stream by mining Kaspa tokens, addressing profitability challenges post-Bitcoin halving. Meanwhile, ETH options show a bullish bias due to improving regulatory outlooks, as evidenced by recent SEC actions.
